Preparation
- For an original American apple pie, it is best to use a round cake pan with a wavy edge.
- For the dough, cut the butter into cubes. Knead the butter cubes with the flour, salt and sugar with your hands until a crumbly mass is formed.
- Then stir cold water into the dough. Form a smaller and a larger circle out of the dough and roll it out.
- For the filling, peel the apples and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Squeeze out the lemon and mix with sugar, flour and apple pie spice.
- Lay out the large rolled out dough in the tin, add the apple mixture and then place the small rolled out dough on top. Press the edges of the dough into the waves of the mold with your fingers. Use a knife to draw a pattern in the center of the cake and brush with egg white. Sprinkle with Tonka sugar.
- Bake the apple pie at 190°C top/bottom heat, first covered with aluminum foil for 25 minutes, then without aluminum foil for a further 20-25 minutes.
Look forward to the smell that your American apple pie will spread throughout the kitchen!
